# What is MCP?

> A two-minute explanation. No technical background needed.

## In one sentence

**MCP is a standard way to plug live data into an AI assistant.**

Think of a USB port. Your AI assistant is the laptop. Widgety's cruise data is the device. MCP is the cable between them.

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. You'll never need to use the term with clients.

## Why it matters

An AI assistant on its own only knows what it learned during training. It doesn't know today's fares, this season's itineraries, or which cabins are left.

Ask it about cruise prices and it will guess. Often confidently, and often wrong.

With the Widgety Connector, it stops guessing and looks up real sailings instead.

| Without Widgety | With Widgety |
| - | - |
| Invented or out-of-date prices | Live GBP fares from current inventory |
| Generic cruise advice | Real sailings, ships, itineraries, cabin grades |
| Copy and paste between supplier sites | Search, compare and quote in one conversation |
| No view of your margin | Commission breakdown per cabin grade |

## What happens when you ask a question

<Steps>
  <Step title="You ask">
    "What Alaska cruises leave Seattle in July 2027?"
  </Step>

  <Step title="The assistant calls Widgety">
    It picks the right Widgety tool, such as "search cruises", and fills in the details from your question.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Widgety returns live results">
    Only sailings from cruise lines your agency is allowed to sell.
  </Step>

  <Step title="The assistant explains them">
    In plain English, ready to share with your client.
  </Step>
</Steps>

You only ever see step 1 and step 4.

## Is it safe?
